Seeking a New Job or Career Advancement?
Be well-informed about your field.
Whether you’re searching for a new job or looking to advance in your career, you need to be able to "talk the talk." So immerse yourself in your chosen field. Join organizations through the Office of Student Life. Build a LinkedIn profile and connect to other professionals in your field. If you haven't already, start reading relevant trade newsletters, websites, or other publications.
Maintain focus. Concentrate on positions that require your skill set, and be sure to highlight how you are the best fit.
Targeted searches are more successful than general ones. Whether you are applying for a job in a new organization or for a promotion in your existing one, take the time to understand the key skills and requirements for the position you are looking to fill. Make sure you have those skills and, if you do, adjust your resume to highlight them. Targeting your job search in this way will work far better than using the same resume over and over again.
Perfect your elevator speech.
An "elevator speech" is a 15–20 second introduction to you, your skills, and what you're looking for in a job. It should be professional and to the point. Be sure to use it with potential and existing coworkers, and teach it to your family and friends so that they can help you network.
Always be professional.
First impressions are lasting impressions. Be sure to act professionally at all times—not just in your interviews but at work and online as well. Take a moment to Google your name. What comes up? Does it convey what you want potential employers to think about you? Review your Facebook and LinkedIn profiles. Do all the notes and photos show you in a good light? For help, you can connect your social media profiles to your individual profile on the Kaplan University CareerNetwork to request review and feedback from a member of the Career Services team.
